It is a well known fact that Calabria is a very underdevelopped region compared to its siblings in the north of Italy and Europe. Certainly and foremost in the field of its Health Care System. This is a moment of extraordinary world crisis, under the powerful yet invisible axis of the new coronavirus. We feel the urge, as CHRISTIANS, to pull together all our experience and personal relations to alleviate the pain of the Calabrians and its health care system which is facing and will continue to face this terrible pandemic. A pathology that becomes even more lethan when it is not contrasted with the appropriate equipment. (Cover image courtesy of Carmelo Minuti, Calabrian artist)
An appeal to reach all Calabrians worldwide
We want to be close to all Calabrian families, close to the fears of the mothers, of the elderly. Our appeal will reach as far as possible, it will reach all Calabrians worldwide; we will solicit the good heart of all people, praying with force our Saint Fracis of Paola, so he may be close to us, in his santity, his strength, his guidance.
We are launching this fundraiser from this portal which was created to be charitable in a way that no one better than Saint Paul could describe.
After thorough investigation and discussion with the local health authorities, it is our intention to buy "volumetric ventilators" which are highly effective and versatile, very useful in case of respiratory insufficiencies which have not yet reached the stage of intesive care intubation. The availability of these ventilators will allows a reduced demand for hospitalisation and intensive care beds which are so scarce in our region. The units can be used at home under medical supervision also in the post hospitalisation recovery phase.
The role of the Diocese of Lamezia Terme
The ventilators wil be delivered to Rev. Fabio Stanizzo, Director of the Diocesan office for social affairs and employment at the Diocese of Lamezia Terme who will coordinate the distribution of the units according to territorial needs to the health services, family doctors and other health structures in Calabria currently fighting against the respiratory complications that arise from COVID-19.
We pray that our Lord will help this fundraiser successful, whatever the amount raised we will ensure full transparency through the sites as to the donations and the units delivered to Don Fabio Stanizzo.
Requests for the use of the equipment will be accepted from the whole region, from health structure or operators which should write with their requirements to email@example.com, specifying clearly their details and requirements and state of urgency so that those in greatest need can be favoured. The organisation will then liaise with Don Fabio to arrange pickups and dropoffs of equipment in the ever evolving situation.
A structured and managed fundraiser to maximise the result
The fundraiser is promoted by SanctisFundMe which will apply the same Zero Fee structure to donations through the platform which was created with Christian values in mid. SanctisFundMe will additionally proactively promote the campaign to maximise visibility.
SanctisFundMe has hired the Calabrian dott. Ermanno Cribari as fundraisers. Born in Calabria he has an extensive netword of connections which we believe will ensure the success of the campaign, nationally and internationally as the appeal will come from a person that knows the territory and its problems and yet has a strong christian belief that will help him convey the message with dedication to international institutions as well as the millions of Calabrians who live abroad.
Dott. Cribary, has already wordked with SanctisFundMe on other projects and we are fully convinced his work will prove essential.
Ventilators aside, any funds raised may also go towards the purchase of sanitary protection equipment which is in great demand and has been insufficient in all health structures nationally with sanitary workers working in precarious yet heroic conditions.
A multi-lingual appeal
The fundraising site is multi-lingual, which will facilitate the communication with the Calabrian communities worldwide, whom this appeal is especially addressed to. We will do all we can with the hope of soliciting thousands of christians in an act of charity. Because charity, if it does not become fact, is only cold and revolting void.
P.S. Should it become apparent during the sanitary emergency in Calabria that the local health structures are coping and are sufficiently equipped, we will divert our efforts to help the regions of the north that at the time of writing are suffering the most - although the spread of the virus is quickly moving south, hence the urgence of this appeal.
The words of the apostle Paul
"Charity suffers long, and is kind; charity envies not; charity braggs not itself, is not puffed up, does not behave itself unseemly, seeks not her own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil; rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth. Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Charity never fails: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away".
Paul: First letter to the Corinthians, chapter 13.
